Introduction
The site assessment exercise was conducted to obtain empirical data on site characteristics,
farmers' readiness, available infrastructure, and socio-economic factors influencing the adoption
of biochar technology at potential biochar production sites.
The objectives of the assessment exercise were:
- Evaluating site suitability
- Assessing biomass availability
- Analyzing farmers' readiness
- Identifying potential risks
Location, personnel and survey timeframe
The exercise to carry out site assessment for biochar production was carried out in Lampung, Indonesia
between 27-27th August, 2025. The exercise was carried out by CABI, Louis Dreyfus Company (LDC) with
coordination from LDC field team members.
The site assessment covered two districts/regencies of Lampung (Tanggamus & West Lampung). The selection of
candidate farmer groups for this second-phase assessment was drawn from LDC’s official list of farmer organizations
in the two districts, ensuring a transparent and well-documented process. The candidate farmers’ list spans
the sub-districts of Gisting, Sumberejo, Pulau Panggung, Ulubelu and Gedung Surian.
Data collection techniques
The site assessment was conducted to obtain comprehensive data on the readiness of both the location
and farmers for implementation of biochar production. This includes the development of assessment
criteria and scoring as assessment tools, in-depth interviews with farmer group leaders and members, and
field visits to verify the gathered information.
Structured group interviews with farmer group leaders and members
Structured interviews were conducted to gather key information on several critical aspects
- Biomass availability
- Site conditions for biochar kiln construction
- Farmer capacity
- Social capital within the community
- Farmer’s motivation in adopting biochar technology
Assessment results
Twelve candidate farmer groups out of the fifteen groups assessed were chosen for the second biochar
production trial - West Lampung (1) and Tanggamus (11).
